David Bowie releases first new material in a decade

Icon David Bowie celebrated his 66th birthday this week by releasing his first new material in a decade. The single, Where are We Now? (pictured on homepage) will be followed by The Next Day, Bowie’s first album since  2003′s Reality and was produced by long-time collaborator Tony Visconti. There are currently no plans for an accompanying tour from Bowie, who underwent surgery in 2004 following a heart attack.

Homebaked surpasses Kickstarter target

About two years ago, Mitchell’s Bakery on Oakfield Road in Anfield went from an operating business that had served the community for decades to being another statistic of the recession. Part of Biennial 2012, the bakery reopened for business for the 10 week duration of the arts festival and proved such a success that a life beyond the Biennial beckoned. With the support of artist Jeanne van Heeswjik, they took to Kickstarter, the funding platform for creative projects. Homebaked has now raised in excess of its £13,000 target to buy a new oven so that baking can once again be done on site.

GIT Award 2013 judging panel revealed

Following last year’s inaugural GIT Award, this week saw the announcement of 2013′s judging panel. As well as returning judges in the form of Bido Lito! editor Craig Pennington, the NME’s Matt Wilkinson and Quietus main man John Doran, GIT founder Peter Guy has impressivley added 6 Music DJ (and son of John Peel) Tom Ravenscroft (pictured below) and Sevenstreets editor Dave Lloyd. First Threshold 2013 acts announced

Grassroots music festival Threshold this week revealed a hand-full of acts for 2013. Confirmed performers at this year’s festival (which will take place over the weekend of 8th – 10th March) are singer songwriter Natalie McCool, Americana-hued Robert Vincent and the ever-innovative Paddy Steer. 2012 Liverpool Art Prize winner Robyn Woolston will be creating a site specific installation for the event at Camp and Furnace. Advance tickets are currently available for £15.

For this weekend only (12th and 13th January) comes the chance to see current Tate Liverpool exhibition, Tracing the Century: Drawing as a Catalyst for Change, for just £1. The exhibition, which examines the influence and importance of drawing, features work by William Orpen, Tracey Emin and William Kentridge amongst others. Read our review.

Turner Prize to be awarded in Glasgow in 2015

Sticking with Tate, it was announced today that 2015′s Turner Prize will be given in Glasgow, at southside arts centre, Tramway. Part of a recent initiative to hold the award outside London, the decision means that for the first time ever the prize will be awarded in Scotland.
