Our pick of this week’s arts, design, film and music events from across Liverpool and beyond…

Monday – Exhibition Continues: Anish Kapoor: Monadic Singularity @ Liverpool Cathedral – FREE

Last seen in a major show in the city more than 40 years ago, Anish Kapoor’s Monadic Singularity is something of a coup for Liverpool Cathedral. Timed to commemorate the centenary of its 1924 consecration, architect Sir Giles Gilbert Scott surely could never have anticipated seeing his imposing neo-Gothic building in conversation with anything quite like this. Curator Elisa Nocente said: “As one of the leading figures in contemporary art, [Kapoor's is] a unique visual language that embraces painting, sculpture, and architectural forms.” If you haven’t yet visited the exhibition, we’d urge you to do so.

Tuesday – Heathers 7.50pm @ FACT Liverpool – £8

Before Mean Girls there was Heathers. Starring Winona Ryder as Veronica – part of the popular clique of girls at school, all, but for Ryder’s character, named Heather – who wants out owing to the groups’ cruelty, and Christian Slater as boyfriend, J.D. Without giving the game away, let’s just say things escalate quickly once the pair confront gang leader, Heather Chandler, with their concerns. A winning cast and quotes for days (“What’s your damage, Heather?”) make its return to cinemas a welcome one.

Wednesday – Hollywoodgate + Director Q&A 7pm @ FACT Liverpool  £8

In Ibrahim Nash’at’s doc, Hollywoodgate (named for what had been a CIA base on the outskirts of Kabul), the director interrogates the aftermath of US forces’ 2021 withdrawal from Afghanistan. In the vacuum they left, Nash’at follows the Taliban’s retaking of Afghanistan – and watches on as they try to retool the $7bn worth of military equipment left behind. Join the director this evening for a post-screening Q&A

Wednesday & Thursday – Blender Deep Dive Workshop: Gregory Herbert 4pm @ FACT Liverpool – £7/£12

Join artist Gregory Herbert, who has been commissioned by the likes of Sheffield Doc Fest (below) as well as FACT, for this two-day deep dive into 3D modelling and animation. In Wednesday’s Blender 101, Herbert covers some basics for beginners; the following day’s Blender 102 is suggested for intermediates (you can book sessions separately or in combination), and covers texture, movement, and using other tech such as AR and 3D printing.

Friday – Exhibition Opening: Tabitha Jussa: Match Day @ Williamson Art Gallery and Museum – FREE

For many, not least in this part of the world, match day is a ritual; a break from the slog of the day-to-day, and to dream of the perfect 90 minutes for your club, its players, and fans. For her ongoing eponymous series, photographer Tabitha Jussa has documented the home fixtures of Liverpool, Everton and Tranmere Rovers, capturing the otherwise ineffable meeting of people transported elsewhere by that most peculiar of things: football fandom.

Saturday – The Royal Standard Summer Fundraiser 3pm @ The Royal Standard, the Baltic Triangle, Liverpool – FREE

Pay a visit to your friendly neighbourhood artist-led gallery for an afternoon of sangria, vegan hot dogs and more – stick around for an affordable art auction in the name of raising funds to keep things going at this crucial, independent grassroots institution.

Sunday – Exhibition Closing: Another View: Landscapes by Women Artists @ Lady Lever Art Gallery, Wirral – FREE

Last chance to see this exhibition of women artists reframing British landscape art; including works by Vanessa Bell, Ingrid Pollard and more.

Latin American Culture Day 12pm @ Future Yard – FREE

Phew, it’s hot out there, so this weekend’s a good time to get outdoors in the Future Yard garden and experience a taste of the rich mixture of music, dance, food and street art (among other things) of a continent. Mexican folk dance group Colibri, Peru’s Tacho Trio and Costa Rica’s DJ Freddy Perez are the tip of the iceberg for what promises to be a day well worth exploring.
