Under the Skin plus Q&A, Curzon Soho

What’s hot this week? Our pick of the listings from around Liverpool and the rest of the UK…

Tuesday – The Negligent Eye 10am-6pm @ the Bluecoat Liverpool — FREE

Opening last Friday, the Bluecoat’s new group exhibition is all about how printmaking has embraced (and sometimes subverted) the technology of scanning. Showcasing some excellent work from the likes of Cory Arcangel, Christiane Baumgartner, Helen Chadwick, Juneau Projects, Imogen Stidworthy, Rachel Whiteread, and Jane and Louise Wilson.

Abandoned Practices & Endangered Uses Illustrated Talk 6.30-8pm@ Nottingham Contemporary — FREE, booking required / Live Broadcast Online

Professor Alan Read (Director, Performance Foundation, Kings College London) and Paul Clarke (Lecturer in Performance Studies, School of Arts, University of Bristol) host a lively ‘illustrated’ discussion on the thinking behind abandoned, lost, redundant and marginalised practices – an emerging field of enquiry adopted by a widening variety of performance artists and researchers. Expect a focus on the work of philosophers Isabelle Stengers and Giorgio Agamben.

Wednesday – The Upsetter: The Life and Music of Lee Scratch Perry 6pm @ Kazimier Garden Liverpool — FREE

Ahead of his live performance on the same night (7.30pm @ the Kazimier £25), see this screening of Ethan Higbee and Adam Bhala Lough’s 2008 documentary on Perry’s strange and colourful life (voiced by Benicio del Toro); highlighting his early life in 60′s Jamaica, his rocky relationship with Bob Marley, and his grammy award-winning reggae and dub career.

Thursday (-Sunday) – Affordable Art Fair @ Battersea Park London — Adult Weekday Ticket £10

Billed as ‘London’s friendliest art fair’, AAF was founded by gallerist Will Ramsey; it now has events in over 11 countries, and has sold more than £200 million in artworks. Expect print, painting, sculpture and photography priced anywhere inbetween £40-4,000; check out their handy online guide to buying art for beginners.

NW Writer’s Meet and Greet 6-9pm @ Common Bar Manchester — FREE, booking required

It’s that time again where we meet like-minded folks for a drink and a chat! So if you’re a writer/blogger living or working in the north-west, are interested in submitting work to local publications, and opening up your social circle and meeting some potential friends, then join us this Thursday. See our preview here.

Under The Skin Plus Jonathan Glazer Q&A 6.20pm @ Curzon Soho London — ticket prices vary

Having praise lavished upon it in abundance, and director Glazer hailed as the next Kubrick, the star here is alien Scarlett Johansson (an ‘iconic’ performance), roaming the streets of Glasgow, hunting down solitary men in her car and, we presume, absorbing them. This weird sci-fi/horror/ thriller is actually one part documentary; many of the victims were filmed secretly (production assistants attempting to get permission afterwards). On general release from Friday.

Friday – Legends of Flight present Hidden Worlds 5pm and 7pm @ Liverpool Central Library — FREE

A collaboration between musicians, visual artists and programmers, this immersive composition plays to the strengths of Central Library’s new Discover room. Lie down and enjoy some beautiful interactive projected visuals, controlled and responding to the voices and electronic/acoustic instruments being played live.

PICK OF THE WEEK: Saturday – Art as Autobiography Talk 1pm @ Waker Gallery Liverpool — FREE, booking required

To coincide with the final weekend of the Walker’s Hockney exhibition, his biographer Christopher Simon Sykes gives a unique insight into the artist’s life, from childhood to when he left the Royal College of Art. Described by Guardian critic Blake Morrison as “a chatty, knowledgeable, insider’s biography”, expect lots of anecdotes and genuine reflection on Hockney’s process and practice. See Painting Pioneer: Early Reflections of David Hockney.

Lunar Lament of Haunted Heart (Trailer) from John Davide Animation on Vimeo.

Lunar Lament of a Haunted Heart 7pm til late @ Blade Factory Liverpool — £5

An epic fundraiser to get London-based artist John Davide’s animation (of the same name) off the ground, Paul Duffy Compositions and War Room Records present live music from By The Sea (luxury, barely-there indie rock), Tear Talk (‘nostalgic, shimmery rock’), plus DJ sets from The Coral, alongside lovely animations and short film projections.

Saturday – Cosmosis: Alternative Festival of Psychedelic Music & Arts 2pm til late @ Antwerp Mansion Manchester — £23.50 ADV

Hot on the heels of the massively successful Liverpool International Festival of Psychedelia, Cosmosis launches this weekend (a collaborative effort between promoters Remake Remodel and Interstellar Overdrive). Expect cult LA psych band The Warlocks to lead the pack (also playing Thursday at the Kazimier with support from kraut/space rockers Mugstar) of over 20 live acts.

Chibuku Shake Shake Birthday 10pm @ East Village Arts Club Liverpool — £16

One of city’s most famous electronic clubnights celebrate their 14th birthday tonight. Featuring Ibiza regular and drum & bass advocate Andy C, London dubstepper Route 94, and uplifting house from Waze & Odyssey, a.k.a Serge Santiago and Firas Waez.

Sunday – Inprint Print Fair 12-5pm @ HAUS Liverpool — FREE

Back with their biggest fair yet, the Inprint gang have invited artists, publications and printmakers from around the north-west to showcase their wares. With affordable prints/posters, zines, book and tees available to buy on the day, plus an exhibition, live Dj’s, drawing tables and screen printing workshops. The best bit? We’ll be there with the very talented (former TDN Artist of the Month) Matthew Storrow. Say hi!
