Film Podcast #19: Lincoln and Zero Dark Thirty

Film Podcast #19: Lincoln and Zero Dark Thirty by The Double Negative on Mixcloud

DW Mault and special guest Adam Scovell review Steven Spielberg’s biographical drama Lincoln, and Kathryn Bigelow’s military thriller Zero Dark Thirty.

In Lincoln, America’s president (played by Daniel Day-Lewis) struggles to deal with the Civil War whilst fighting with politicians inside his own government, on the decision to to vote for the 13th Amendment and abolish slavery.

The Telegraph thought that “the film manages to say more about slavery with restraint than Tarantino’s Django Unchained did with its flailing overkill” – but what did our reviewers think?

Plus, the aftermath of 9/11 and the war on terror is chronicled in Bigelow’s follow up the The Hurt Locker, Zero Dark Thirty. The film follows CIA operative Maya (Jessica Chastain) and her obsession with hunting down terrorist Osama bin Laden.

The Guardian called it “a fascinating film” – but did our reviewers find it heroic or offensive?

Hosted by director and cineaste DW Mault, with special guest, blogger and filmmaker Adam Scovell.
