The initial focus of the gallery was to collect 19th and 20th century American art, but this was quickly abandoned because of donations that span all areas of art. Donations facilitated by MSU Art Department faculty member Charles Pollock (brother of Jackson Pollock), and his friend, art critic Clement Greenberg, expand the holdings of modern abstract painting.
