Film Podcast #14: 5 Broken Cameras

DW Mault reviews amateur filmmaker Emad Burnat’s 5 Broken Cameras, a documentary about one community’s peaceful resistance against the odds.

When his son Gibreel is born, Palestinian villager Emad gets his first camera. At the same time, a separation barrier is being built in his village, causing pain and fear amongst his friends and neighbours. For more than five years, Emad films his son growing up alongside the conflict, daily arrests, shootings and night raids. One camera after another is shot at or smashed, each one telling a part of his story.

“It presents with overwhelming power a case of injustice on a massive scale” – the Guardian

Hosted by director and cineaste DW Mault with special guest, photographer, documentarian and political activist Dave Williams.

5 Broken Cameras screens tomorrow at FACT, 6pm, alongside a special recorded interview with Israeli co-director Guy Davidi.
