GRAD SHOWCASE: Pro Picks
– Luke Tonge
Continuing the GRADSHOWCASE series devised by Craig Oldham Luke Tonge, co-director of Birmingham Design, selects his Pro Picks of 2020′s graduates…
George Lee, University of Salford
Urgh. George Lee is so darnn talented I can’t even… Where do I begin? Self-described as a design hobbit (read his ‘about me’) George already has charming illustration, slick advertising, clever copywriting, gorgeous collage and fantastic art direction in his portfolio. Add to that his killer animation & UX work and I’m basically ready for retirement. Bravo George!
India Wilson, London College of Communication, UAL
India strikes me as a perfectionist, but not in a stuffy way, in a she-only-does-excellent work kinda way. The six case studies on her site are varied and all fantastic – showcasing enviable attention to detail and control of her mediums. I love it all, but the surprise inside her ‘Dot Dot Dot’ map? Mind-blowing! (and the exterior was already incred).
Kavanagh Reeves, University of Lincoln
With a name as unique as Kavanagh you know this kid means business – and his portfolio does not disappoint. I saw his work described as ‘buzzing with personality’ and upon close inspection I totally agree… I’d also add class, style and quality. His ‘Not Just’ branding & packaging immediately drew me in with its confident simplicity.
Rachel Davies, Falmouth University
Rachel is a communicator driven by curiosity, with a deft touch and clean approach which belies her age – her work is sensitive, fresh and calming. ‘Launder’, her RSA-award-winning project (reimagining of the laundrette as a multi-service clothing care destination) is a great example of her mature, conscientious and sophisticated approach.
Rebecca Burrows, University of Leeds
Rebecca has a portfolio bursting with bold colour and confident work that cleverly uses design tropes, without ever feeling cliched or shallow. It’s no surprise she’s already completed a placement year, interning at four different companies in London. She is multi-talented and versatile, with a bright future ahead.
Luke Tonge / Birmingham Design Festival
Luke Tonge is a graphic designer, lecturer, and events wrangler in Birmingham. He specialises in identity & editorial work for brands, agencies and charities. As an introvert he finds it ironic to now spend most of his time on some sort of stage. He’s a visiting lecturer at Birmingham City University and co-director of Birmingham Design, the organisation responsible for the Birmingham Design Festival & Glug Birmingham.
Craig Oldham
The Office Of Craig Oldham is the eponymous practice of designer and creative consultant Craig Oldham.
