Continuing the GRADSHOWCASE series devised by Craig Oldham, today is the turn of designer and founder of Fuse Manchester, Jaheed Hussain, to select his Pro Picks of 2020′s graduates…

Anukriti Sai, Coventry University

Anukriti’s brand identity projects are varied, vivid and engaging at first glance. Upbeat’s presented perfectly, showing off how a simplistic icon can be used across collateral in a strong way. Erbe’s typographic letterform calmly conveys the togetherness characteristic of the project & Better Together uses its textured imagery to elevate the overall message.

Dan Ayris, Norwich University of the Arts

Dan’s graphic design practice portrays a rebellious nature to his work – often breaking the traditional editorial rules, to create empowering work that isn’t afraid to shout aloud. In particular with Queery, showing shades of Paula Scher’s Public Library projects, with his use of elongated letterforms and text. Big fan, keep it up.

Hannah Kirkland

Hannah’s cityscape illustrations are carefully crafted to build a bright and atmospheric canvas – symmetrical in some places, objects in others. Hannah’s presentation across the board always enhances the content, with the Pedal project portraying her strong design skills too.

Hazel Laing, Edinburgh College of Art, University of Edinburgh

Hazel’s illustrative practice is incredibly intricate and full of energy. It’s tough to not get drawn into its rough textures mixed within the complex drawings and compositions. At first impression, its playfulness is reminiscent of the likes of Manjit Thapp, despite the difference in style and context. Love it.

Maryam Al Khalifa, Chelsea College of Arts, University of the Arts London

Maryam’s photographic work is powerful. Capturing the environment and using the scenery to her advantage. I personally feel drawn into the man on the surfboard, with a dog. Alongside the quietly humorous subject, the surroundings across the entire image is thought-provoking. On top of that, Maryam’s typographic work is expansive – based on old traditional type rules, it’d be great to see them put together for future projects.
