Culture Diary w/c 25-06-2018
Our pick of this week’s arts, design, film and music events from around the North of England and the rest of the UK – and loads of it’s free!
Monday — Antonio Lopez 1970: Sex Fashion & Disco (2017) 6.30pm @ FACT, Liverpool — £7.50/5.50
See the impact of fashion illustrator Antonio Lopez tonight in James Crump’s documentary: a creative visionary who rose to fame at the same time as gay rights political movements and ready-to-wear; and whose muses, called “Antonio’s Girls”, included the fabulous Grace Jones, Jessica Lange and Jerry Hall.
Tuesday – Molly Palmer: Artist Presentation 6-7.30pm @ Tŷ Pawb, Wrexham — FREE
An explosion of colour, choreography, handmade props and costumes, get an insight into Molly Palmer’s artwork tonight before her solo exhibition is unveiled at Tŷ Pawb next year. Expect an abstract view of ordinary things and how strange they can be.
Wednesday – James Bridle And A New Dark Age 6.30-8pm @ The Bluecoat, Liverpool — £4/3
See artist and writer James Bridle tonight discuss his new book, New Dark Age: a terrifying insight into how computers are keeping the secrets of megacorporations, translating our needs, and heading towards making decisions on our behalf. Expect expert commentary on what is needed: “a metalanguage for describing the world that complex systems have wrought.”
Thursday — Performance By Hassnat Sikander 7-7.30pm @ Output Gallery, Liverpool – FREE
To coincide with her haunting solo exhibition, which opened last week, Hassnat Sikander’s performance tonight will explore the trauma of forced marriage and domestic abuse. Expect a physical performance (spoiler alert) which grapples with building something new out of something destroyed.
Friday – Exhibitions Opening: Tracing PAPER @ PAPER Gallery + Twice As Nice @ PS Mirabel 6-9pm @ Mirabel Studios, Manchester — FREE
In Tracing Paper, 10 artists – including Iain Andrews, Niki Colclough and Ruth Murray – show new work they’ve made throughout a mentoring scheme run by the PAPER Gallery; celebrating the 2D material in a variety of different forms. In Twice As Nice, shown in the same building behind Manchester Victoria Station, you can catch an exhibition of 50 finalists and 100 artworks from the PS Mirabel 2018 Open Exhibition awards; the winner of which will get £200 and a solo show next year. Ooer!
Saturday – Zine & Photobook Fair 2018 11am-4pm @ Open Eye Gallery, Liverpool – FREE
Do you like handmade books? Are you a sucker for the self-published? Do you go zany over zines? Head down to Mann Island this Saturday for a day-long market of local publishers and artists who will have a top selection of photobooks, prints, and DIY magazines for show and sale.
