Culture Diary w/c 22-08-2016

What’s hot this week? Our pick of the arts, design, film and music listings from around Liverpool and the rest of the UK…

Thursday – Exhibition Opening: Brigitte Jurack: Doppelgänger 6-8pm @ Lewisham Arthouse, London — FREE

Running with the uncanny concept of the double or shadow self, and curated by Manchester Metropolitan University’s Programme Leader in Fine Art Brigitte Jurack, expect 14 artists – including James Quin, Flora Whiteley and Charlie Godet Thomas – to double through reflection, observation and making. Until 28 Aug.

PICK OF THE WEEK: Another Version of Events: Sans Soleil (1983) 6.30pm @ FACT, Liverpool — £7/5

Prepare to be dazzled by this sci-fi imbued, imaginative travelogue from Africa to Japan… Cited as one of experimental director/filmmaker Chris Marker’s best films (La Jetée (1962), A Grin Without a Cat (1977)), expect a clever interpretation of life on planet Earth, as a female narrator reads from letters supposedly sent to her by a (fictitious) cameraman. Part of the Liverpool Biennial 2016 film programme.

Friday – Slam Fridays: Deep Throat Choir, Live Performance 5-8pm @ Jerwood Space, London -- FREE

Friday – Slam Fridays: Deep Throat Choir, Live Performance 5-8pm @ Jerwood Space, London — FREE

We saw this Hackney-based, all female choir (above) cover Bjork, Sade, Nina Simone and more at Green Man Festival last week, and if that spine-tingling performance was anything to go by, Friday’s series of live (re-arranged) pop covers with artist Katie Schwab is a must. Included in Schwab’s Jerwood Solo Presentations commission, her installation explores the homage within the work of female designers, artists and musicians.

Exhibition Opening: Dip 6-9pm @ Crown Building Studios Gallery, Liverpool — FREE

New sculptural and performance work (below) from two London-based artists, expect Jemma Egan and Alexander Duncan to show the results of their shared interests in repetition, production, touch and perception. Until 11 Sept.

Exhibition Opening: Dip 6-9pm @ Crown Building Studios Gallery, Liverpool -- FREE

Saturday – Islam, Gender and Sexuality Panel & Q&A 5-630pm @ Number 70 Oxford Street, Manchester — FREE

As part of Manchester Pride’s Superbia Weekend, expect a much-needed dialogue examining gender and sexuality in relation to Islam, and from Muslim perspectives, with German academic and trans woman Leyla Jagiella, and Deputy Director of the Muslim Institute Samia Rahman.

Transgender Film Festival 5pm (6pm Start) @ The Cinema Museum, London — £5

An affordable evening film festival with insight into trans-life, look out for Iris Prize winning short film Vessels (Arkasha Stevenson, USA), on the need for legal surgery, before main feature Dressed as a Girl (Colin Rothbart, UK, below) about six people at the heart of East London’s alternative drag scene.

Transgender Film Festival 5pm (6pm Start) @ The Cinema Museum, London -- £5

Sunday — Mark Simmonds: Bad Scouse 6-9pm @ The Cow & Co Café, Liverpool – £50

Partly inspired by eccentric tunnel-builder/Industrialist Joseph Williamson’s (1796-1840) infamous dinner party – where most of his disgusted guests left early after being served porridge, and those “real friends” who stayed received a lavish feast – artist, designer and print aficionado Mark Simmonds invites you to enjoy a three course meal and performance, with an exclusive artwork to take home. Expect themes of fast food, local heroes, and the psychological spaces that surround food. Hosted by Tžužjj.
