Film Podcast #28: A Late Quartet by The Double Negative on Mixcloud

DW Mault reviews Yaron Silberman’s drama, A Late Quartet.

After playing together for 25 years, a classical string quartet are thrown into disarray in the face of illness, lust and competition.

Cellist and oldest member of the quartet, Peter (Christopher Walken), makes a decision to retire after finding out he has Parkinson’s Disease. He decides that their next concert will be his last, farewell performance. As a consequence, the group’s foundations are shaken; second violin Robert Gelbart (Philip Seymour Hoffman), and his viola player wife, Juliette (Catherine Keener); and first violinist, Daniel Lerner (Mark Ivanir). The members struggle to find their new roles within the group and inevitably question its future.

“A subtle, intelligent picture with a suitably resonant title” – The Guardian
