DW Mault reviews Danny Boyle’s neo noir thriller Trance and Francois Ozon’s psychological drama Dans la Maison …

Filmed at the same time as he was planning the London Olympics ceremony, Boyle’s Trance is at heart a heist film. Art auctioneer Simon (James McAvoy) gets mixed up with criminal Franck (Vincent Cassel) and the theft of a Goya painting. After suffdering from amnesia, hypnotherapist Elizabeth (Rosario Dawson) is brought in to help Simon remember where he hid the artwork. Provoking reactions shifting from “dazzling, absorbing entertainment” (Empire), to “a tolerable distraction” (Irish Times) and “a tedious shambles” (Daily Mail) – but what did our panel think?

Dans la Maison (In the House) follows bored teacher Germain (Fabrice Luchini) and his mentoring of talented sixteen-year-old pupil Claude (Ernst Umhauer). Worming his way into the house of a fellow student from his literature class, and sharing the essays he writes about the experience for his teacher, things start to get uncomfortable and Germain wonders how far he should let Claude manipulate those around him.

Hosted by director and cineaste DW Mault, with special guests Christopher and Laura Brown and Natalie Hughes.
