Tuesday – Jiro Dreams of Sushi 8.30pm @ FACT

Jiro Ono is the 85 year old master chef at a 10-seater sushi restaurant, secreted away in an underground station in Tokyo.  The clue somewhat in the title, Jiro Dreams of Sushi tells the remarkable and affirming story of the man, his sons and their methods astride the very top of the fashionable foodie market in Japan.

Wednesday – Delia Darlings 6.30pm @ FACT FREE

Delia Derbyshire was an innovator, ‘rock & roll’ member of the BBC’s (now sadly defunct) Radiophonic Workshop and co-author of the Doctor Who theme tune, and last week saw the first ever Delia Derbyshire Day– a day to “celebrate and highlight the fascinating work of … the pioneering electronic music composer”. A dedicated touring event arrives at FACT this week, including a screening of award-winning documentary The Delian Mode plus Q&A with director Kara Blake.

Not Just Private View 7pm @ The Domino Gallery

Remember the hordes of happy, informed and informative Biennial volunteers who seemed able to answer anything asked of them (within reason, of course)? Well this week sees them present an exhibition of their own work in Upper Newington’s Domino Gallery (previously the Green Fish Cafe). Entitled Not Just – pointing out their status as artists as well as volunteers – it’s a reminder that people working for free in this sector are often dedicated, practicing artists in their own right. Open to the public Thursday 17th-Sunday 20th, 11am-5pm.

Thursday – Free Rock & Roll: Swingin’ Bricks, Los Gatos and Guitar Villain 9pm @ Mello Mello

Some words go wonderfully well together, and we suppose that there are few combinations more pleasing than free and Rock & Roll. This Thursday at Mello Mello, that fusion is brought to life by a trio of acts in the form of the rockabilly of Swingin’ Bricks, the garage blues of Los Gatos and Guitar Villain.

Friday – Warm Breeze Over Rock: Joanne Masding & Flore Nové-Josserand 6pm @ The Royal Standard

Warm Breeze Over Rock is the latest exhibition to come to The Royal Standard. Exploring “the distinct parameters of place, object and image”, the visiting artist duo of Masding and Nové-Josserand aim to question our understanding of characters and the spaces they occupy. Featuring a combination of print and video, it will be interesting to see how their site specific methods respond to  one of the city’s leading independent galleries.

Saturday – A Universal Archive – William Kentridge as Printmaker Exhibition Tour 2pm @ The Bluecoat

A firm favourite here (read our review), William Kentridge’s Universal Archive at the Bluecoat features around 100 pieces of work. As such, a bit of contextualisation would do no harm at all. With this in mind, it’s more than worth popping along this weekend to take in the exhibition accompanied by Alan Jones, an artist based at the Bluecoat, and Artistic Director, Bryan Biggs.

10 Bands 10 Minutes: Fleetwood Mac @ The Kazimier £5

Fleetwood Mac are a band whose songs never seem to age, and are in the news again following their reformation. Very timely then that this weekend sees the 10 Bands 10 Minutes focus fall on Stevie Nicks, et al. With renditions of Fleetwood Mac classics performed by the likes of Married to the Sea and Silent Sleep, this is the week’s ‘does what it says on the tin’ entry.

PICK OF THE WEEK: Sunday – Bird Sheet Music @ Tate Liverpool

You may have already seen the Daily Mail getting a bit annoyed by artists Kerry Morrison and Helmut Lemke’s work. It makes you love what they’re doing all the more. Morrison and Lemke have been taking nature’s calls to “represent what comes naturally” – read collecting bird droppings onto sheet music, around Liverpool parks, aiming for an eventual translation into a visual score by composer Jon Hering. Sunday sees an installation of their work so far with a special performance by experimental orchestra a.P.A.t.T. Performances at 14.30, 15.30 and 16.30 (approx 20 mins long).
