Culture Diary w/c 19-11-12

Monday – Beak> 7.30pm @ The Kazimier £8

Featuring the trio of Bristolian musicians Geoff Barrow (Portishead), Billy Fuller and Matt Williams, Beak> released their eponymous debut album in 2009. Boasting an impressively menacing kraut-noir sound, Beak>, if not a band to dispel the Monday blues, fully deserve a place at the top of your ‘to do’ list.

Tuesday – Barbara 6pm @ FACT

Leafing through this month’s Sight & Sound magazine, it was interesting to note the types of German films UK audiences are most drawn to. Of the top 10 German language movies at the UK box office, period thrillers –particular those of a political bent – feature heavily. Fitting that trend is Christian Petzold’s 1980s, East German set Barbara, whose doctor of the title is punished for her political insubordination. Full preview…

Moving Horizontals & Digital Distance – Artist Talk 6.30pm @ FACT

Edge Hill University lecturers Alex Jukes and James Snazell find themselves moonlighting (in the guise of artists) at FACT this Tuesday. On hand to provide context and explanation of their artistic practice, the pair will be discussing, among other things, experimental animation.

Wednesday – Patrick Wolf 7.30pm @ The Gallery £18.50

By happy coincidence, Patrick Wolf’s 10th anniversary acoustic world tour ties in very nicely with Homotopia. On Wednesday, Wolf, whose tour brings him to The Gallery on Stanhope Street, will perform a selection of his (somewhat underrated) five albums worth of material armed with piano, harp and dulcimer. Something of a midweek pick-me-up.

Thursday – Rodriguez 8pm @ Liverpool Philharmonic Hall £20/£25

Given new life and purpose by this year’s Searching for Sugar Man, Rodriguez, having spent years in the wilderness has completed the transition from myth to once again wowing audiences and selling out shows. This Thursday is an opportunity to catch the musician while you can.

Friday – Enrico David @ the Walker Art Gallery 11am – 3pm FREE

Nominated for the Turner Prize in 2009, the current Walker exhibition is the first solo show in the UK (outside London) for Italian artist Enrico David. Friday offers a rare opportunity to get to know more about the artist in a day of special talks and events from curator Ann Jones, exhibitions officer Linda Pittwood and  art historian Julie Robson.

Sunday – Funny Arabs with Maysoon Zayid @ Epstein Theatre £8.50/£12.50

“We always prayed we would find a black lesbian disabled woman, then we found you.” Considered one of America’s first Muslim women comedians and the first person ever to perform standup in Palestine and Jordan, Zayid draws on her experience of disability, and the trials of being a female American born to Palestinian Muslim parents for her comedy act.

Biennial Picks

Tuesday – Talk Tuesdays: John Moores Painting Prize 1-2pm @ Walker Art Gallery , FREE

As our Artist of the Month commented this week, “there aren’t that many places where you can go and see a really great collection of contemporary painting.” Follow Art Historian Julie Robson around the JMPP, learning why it was established, what it means to the city and why it’s still relevant.

Wednesday – Two Years at Sea Q&A 6.30pm @ FACT (pictured)

Ben Rivers’ debut feature-length work, shot on 16mm film, is described by our film podcast host DW Mault as “mysteriously beautiful”. Catch this rare Q&A with the director, where he will no doubt discuss his main character Jake, first encountered in his short This is My Land. Living alone in a ramshackle house in the middle of the forest, the film plays out Jake’s frugal existence, the reality of a radical dream he had as a younger man.

Friday – Sun Drums record release and exhibition closing party 7pm @ Wolstenholme Creative Space, FREE

Order of Nothing, commissioned by WCS for their Biennial exhibition Inhospitable Landscape, is a “dark, aggressive and industrial electronic piece that explores themes of alienation, hostility and dystopia to devastating effect.” Celebrate the closing of the exhibition (and indeed the whole Biennial) by hearing it played live, and be one of the first 100 in to get a free copy of the record.
