Culture Diary w/c 09-04-12

Monday – Breakfast Club/Pretty In Pink @ FACT 8pm

At his peak, Writer/Director John Hughes launched many a career and left an indelible mark on a generation, introducing us to the likes of Home Alone, Uncle Buck and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. This evening, FACT screens a Breakfast Club / Pretty In Pink double bill; two of the films that most characterize his work, both of which star everybody’s favourite strawberry blonde, Molly Ringwald.

Tuesday – Once Upon a Time In Anatolia @ FACT 8.30pm

Co-winner of the Grand Prix at Cannes last year, where it premiered, Once Upon A Time In Anatolia is co-written and directed by Nuri Bilge Ceylan. Though it can loosely be described as a police procedural, it bears little resemblance to what Western audiences are used to – CSI wherever, this ain’t. Described by the Guardian’s hard to please Peter Bradshaw as “a brilliant, masterly film”, this, we’re guessing, is DW Mault’s tip of the week.

The Tragical Past & Mysterious Present of Sodem Hall  @ The Kazimier 7.30pm £5 per episode

Who did murder Lord Sodem? Who will get the inheritance? Do women’s heads really explode if they learn to read? All questions posed in the live action, period soap-opera that is The (wonderfully named) Tragical Past & Mysterious Present of Sodem Hall. Told in six parts and performed by drama company Impropriety, there’s still time to catch up on the action.

Wednesday – Laura Gibson @ Leaf 7.30pm £7

Laura Gibson describes her home town of La Grande as a place that “people usually pass through on their way to somewhere else, but which contains a certain gravity, a curious energy.” With the end of that quote, Gibson could be describing her record of the same name. Certainly, the title track is full of eerie arcadian imagery, and a healthy helping of faded glamour. Not a bad way to break up the week.

Thursday – Curious Stories From Curious Minds 6pm @ Liverpool School of Art and Design 7.30pm

Curious Minds is a charity working to improve children and young people’s lives by increasing opportunities for active participation in arts, culture and creative learning. This Thursday sees the launch of Curious Stories From Curious Minds, a book featuring stories contributed by, amongst others, Dame Judi Dench, Benedict Cumberbatch and David Shrigley. The launch is accompanied by an exhibition of artwork from the publication.

Friday – Gold Soundz II 10pm @ The Kazimier £4

With a tip of the hat to those kings of lo-fi slacker rock, Pavement, last month’s Gold Soundz got us all of a nostalgic fluster. It didn’t disappoint and we’re happy that Friday sees it return, this time with Cowtown in place of the Vasco Da Gama boys, who played a covers set featuring the likes of Weezer, Pixies and, of course, Pavement.

Saturday - The a.P.A.t.T. Orchestra presents … Gavin Bryars’ The Sinking of the Titanic 13:00/14:15  @ Merseyside Maritime Museum

This 100 year anniversary of a maritime disaster has thrown up various inappropriate ‘tributes’, none worse perhaps than the cruise taking the same route, stopping off at the ‘special’ point where the liner sank. Have no fear though, this weekend sees The a.P.A.t.T. Orchestra perform an interpretation of Gavin Bryars’ The Sinking of The Titanic in their inimitable style. Set in the surrounds of the Maritime Museum, this should be something a bit special.

Sunday – Sea of Bees / Stealing Sheep 7.30pm @ Leaf £8.50

Not to be confused with She Keeps Bees, Sea of Bees is an altogether different beast. Gentle indie-pop it may be, but on the evidence of last year’s Songs for the Ravens, that only serves to lull you into willing surrender. The project of Julie Ann Bee, this gig offers the perfect opportunity to get better acquainted in the intimate setting of Leaf. Joined by label-mates Stealing Sheep, it has all the makings of a, ahem, Heavenly occasion.
