Tuesday 3 – Silent Front/Spitting Cobra/Aeroplane Flies High/Love Among the Mannequins @ The Pilgrim, 7pm, £2 (min donation)
The Pilgrim has been hosting some great, cheap gigs of late, with the likes of The Left Hand amongst those rocking up. Tonight the student-friendly pub welcomes post-hardcore band Silent Front, with support coming in the guise of Spitting Cobra, Aeroplane Flies High, and Love Among the Manequins.
Wednesday 4 – Star Trek: The Motion Picture @ FACT, 6.30pm
Before J.J. Abrams put his stamp on the franchise back in 2009, this is what the Star Trek universe looked and felt like 30 years hence. Helmed by Robert Wise (previously best know for West Side Story), this first feature outing for the crew of the Starship Enterprise trod familiar ground to the (always surprisingly) short-lived TV show. It features all of the favourites, and where Abrams sought to steer a new path, ST:TMP is perhaps best viewed with a helping of irony. Now, where are our phasers so we can set them to zzzzzzzap!
TiLT @ The Kazimier, 7.30pm, £5/£4 conc for one night or £8/£7 conc for both nights
Billed as ‘an evening of dance with live music and visual accompaniment’, TiLT is an opportunity to experience The Kazimier outside of the usual context of a sweaty gig. It also provides an opportunity to support local dance artists and assess the state of performance art up close. Continues Thursday.
Thursday 5 – Man on Wire @ St Luke’s Church, 7pm, £2 min donation
Not content with charting the incredible story of Philippe Petit’s daring and illegal high-wire act (pictured) betwixt the as yet unopened Twin Towers of the World Trade Centre in 1974, Man on Wire takes a close look at what drives Petit. Paced like a thriller – an incredible cat and mouse takes place before Petit can even attempt the crossing – with the heightening factor, excuse the pun, of knowing (some of) what comes next, Man on Wire is a thoughtful and deep look at what many consider the artistic crime of the last century.
Exhibition PV, PLANS WITHIN PLANS, Richard Whitby @ The Royal Standard, 6pm, free
Merseyside lad Richard Whitby returns from the big smoke to debut an ambitious solo exhibition, at a superb gallery that’s just starting to shed it’s hidden gem image and (deservedly) attract wider audiences. With references to David Lynch’s Dune, architectural ‘pre-visualisations’, cinematic special effects, stage-set designs and advertising, with elements of video, writing, print and sculpture, this has the potential to be one of the top exhibitions of the year. Not to be missed.
Sunday 8 – CRAIG CHARLES FUNK & SOUL DJ SET @ The Magnet, 10.30pm, £10
Renegade of funk, and sometime corrie star, Craig Charles has been hitting his groove recently on a fine Radio 6 show, and with the reopening of The Magnet seems to have found a place to call home. If you find yourself regularly tuning in to get on down to his funk and soul radio show, it goes without saying, this is probably for you.
