Monday – Little Men (2016) @ Picturehouse Cinemas Nationwide
Ira Sachs’ coming-of-age-drama is getting a lot of five-star reviews; possibly because it’s tender, funny, and manages to talk about money worries without being partonising or schmaltzy. “Brimming with little truths about modern life.” (Variety)
Tuesday — Grilled Cheese Competition 4-8pm @ Filter + Fox, Liverpool – FREE
Yep, we said grilled cheese competition. A fan club for cheese fans, a shortlist of eight will present their best cheesy recipe live (no more than six ingredients! Must be accompanied by matching beverage and music!) to a panel of judges tonight.
Thursday – Exhibition Opening: Work It! 6-9pm @ A-side B-side Gallery, London — FREE
“Is it worth it? Lemme work it!” Mimicking a nail salon, expect new works by artists — and shop girls – Ellie Barrett, Olivia Brazier and Sophie Rogers to question everything from female labour to the Day Job. See it until 2 Oct.
Friday – Emerging Practices: Ensuring Development And Sustainability 11am- 4pm @ The Bluecoat, Liverpool — FREE
Join Art Fund, Tate Liverpool Artistic Director Francesco Manacorda, writer and curator George Vasey and the Guardian’s Charlotte Higgins for this day-long symposium. There’s not much information, but expect some riveting debate on the development and sustainability of – and what that means for – our cultural institutions.
Finnish Video Shorts Programme 1: Poetic Q&A 6pm @ HOME Manchester — £4/3
Remember Shia LaBeouf, Nastja Säde Rönkkö and Luke Turner‘s #TOUCHMYSOUL existential call centre? See Rönkkö in person again, this time discussing her solo work; with fellow Fin Elena Näsänen and founder of the Finnish Art Agency, Laura Köönikkä. Expect artist films on the theme of poetic narratives; don’t miss part two on surreal realities at 1pm tomorrow.

PICK OF THE WEEK: Saturday – Brighton Photo Biennial @ Venues Across Brighton — FREE
In its seventh edition, this year’s highlights include Ewen Spencer’s photographs of teenagers at Notting Hill Carnival and in Liverpool; and Olivia Arthur and Bharat Sikka’s collaborative, documentary LGBT portraits, taken in Mumbai and Brighton. See it until 30 Oct.
Suzanne Lacy’s Shapes of Water, Sounds of Hope 11am-late @ Smith & Nephew Mill, Brierfield, Lancashire — Invite Only
Shape Note and Sufi chanting have been the main tool for US artist Suzanne Lacy to bring the communities of Pennine Lancashire together; today, the group put their new skills to the test in an all day performance, followed by banquet for 500 people.
