Tuesday — Loved Ones 7.30pm @ Buyers Club, Liverpool — £5 ADV
With a beautiful, animated, watercolour music video (above) for new single Cartridge, we’re expecting good things from Loved Ones tonight; celebrating a brand new album Harness AND back on stage live for the first time in nearly three years. With support from L U M E N, James Canty and Lying Bastards.
Wednesday – Exhibitions Opening: A Bad Policeman is Always Busy / Reactor: The Gold Ones 6-8pm @ Gallery North, Northumbria University, Newcastle upon Tyne — FREE
Two exhibition openings for the price of one tonight: group show A Bad Policeman is Always Busy has a stellar line-up, including Cactus Gallery’s Joe Fletcher Orr, who also has a solo show on at International 3 at the moment, plus Holly Hendry, who makes bizarre, tactile sculptures echoing masseuse chairs and cat gyms. Meanwhile, performance collective Reactor (comprising core members Bruce Asbestos, Phillip Henderson and Niki Russell) present the Cosmic Care Home (CCH). Expect wild and absurdist narratives.
Thursday — Talk: Assemble 6-7pm @ Liverpool School of Art and Design — FREE
Meet Turner Prize 2015 winners and architectural collective Assemble tonight, who will be speaking about working closely with LJMU students (lucky things). Last seen at Tate Liverpool’s Art Gym, this seems like a prolific period for the group; catch them while you can.
Exhibition Opening: Jean-Luc Moulène: Larvae And Ghosts 6-8pm @ Thomas Dane Gallery, London — FREE
Jean-Luc Moulène is an artist who, in his own words, gives “concrete existence to mental images”. Previous and new works resemble skulls (below) of humans, donkeys and pigs, rendered in concrete, to intricate, twirling, multicoloured glass organs. His fourth solo exhibition at this gallery, expect sculpture, photography and drawing to invade floors, tables and wall space.
Friday – Exhibition Opening: Makers Dozen: In-Source 6-8.30pm @ Made North Gallery/Cantor Building, Sheffield Hallam University, Sheffield — FREE
Get to Sheffield Hallam tonight and enjoy talks (6-6.45pm) from Manchester-based collective Makers Dozen — including Joe Hartley, Laura Negus and Eleanor Simms — before popping over the road (7-8.30pm) to Yorkshire Artspace’s Made North Gallery, to see the results of their “period of learning, play, and appropriation”. Expect an introduction to an exciting new generation of independent designers.
Exhibition Opening: New Paintings 6pm @ Washington Boardroom, Glasgow — FREE
Slap-bang in the middle of Glasgow International Festival: three young painters to keep an eye on, all born 1984/5. Glasgow-based Jack McConville’s (below) recent solo exhibitions include The Modern Institute, Glasgow, and Authetic Spiritual Spray at Ibid Gallery, LA; Manchester-based Oscar Godfrey, last seen in So Low at Caustic Coastal, Manchester, and Business as Usual at STCFTHOTS, Leeds; and Liverpool-based Michael Lacey, recently exhibited in New Mythologies at Editions Gallery, Liverpool, and Lustre Fabrics (with Tessa Norton) at Open House, Saltaire.
BEEF At Film Material 7pm @ Rogue Studios, Manchester — FREE (Booking Required)
As Rogue Studios in Manchester prepares to sadly evacuate their building of 21 (!) years, they’re marking the move with a programme of events around space, place and artist-making called Rogue21. Tonight’s film and performance is brought to you by the Bristol Experimental and Expanded Film collective: an impressive line-up of artists including Matt Davies (Expo Leeds/Kitev Oberhausen/Spike Island/Schmalfilmtage Dresden), Vicky Smith (Alchemy FF/London SFF/Arnolfini/Tate Britain/London Film Makers Co-Op) and more.
PICK OF THE WEEK: Saturday — Record Store Day @ Venues Nationwide
With over 200 indie record stores nationwide taking part, show your appreciation for local, independent sellers and music. Highlights of the day include Hannah Peel’s Music Box Tour of the South-East coast; DJ sets from Mary Anne Hobbs and Domino’s Higher Authorities at Piccadilly Records, Manchester; limited edition releases at the smallest record store in the UK, VOD Music in Mold, Wales; plus a bumper live show at Rough Trade, East London, including Irish singer- songwriter Glen Hansard, multi-instrumentalist Georgia, and Benjamin John Power’s solo project Blanck Mass… Can’t get out? Don’t miss BBC 6 Music’s taster Friday morning, with Lauren Laverne broadcasting live from Resident Music (Brighton), 10am-1pm.

Sunday — Victoria (2015) 3.50pm @ FACT, Liverpool — £10.50/9.50/8.50
A German heist-thriller from director Sebastian Schipper, this entire film has been shot in a single, incredible take. Getting rave reviews for its technical prowess and intense atmosphere, and winning multiple awards at Berlinale International Film Festival, the film’s star is Laia Costa as Victoria; a Spanish girl in Berlin, who meets and falls for local man Sonne (Frederick Lau) on one wild night out.
