Monday – Tunabunny/Puzzle/10p Mixes/Karen Ablaze 8pm @ Mello Mello £3

Something you learn quickly writing regularly about music is don’t believe the hype trotted out in press releases by PRs and the like. Bearing that in mind, on reading how Tunabunny (main image) recall “Throwing Muses, Sonic Youth, the Elephant 6 collective and more besides”, you’ll forgive us our circumspection. One listen to 2012′s Genius Fatigue though, and whoever came up with the above quote had a point. Four bands for £3? Get there.

Springsteen & I 9pm @ FACT

We’ve never got Springsteen. Nor do we have too much time for monikers other than those given us; so y’know, getting called ‘The Boss’, for example. That said, we understand we’re often in the minority with this particular dinosaur of rock, and maybe we’re missing something.

Tuesday – The Great Gatsby 7.30pm @ Liverpool Philharmonic £6/£7

The Great Gatsby; not only is it F. Scott Fitzgerald’s contribution to (and near the top of) that pile marked GREAT AMERICAN NOVEL, it also happens to be a great novel of the art-deco period. Where better then than to watch the latest attempt at a Hollywood adaptation than in the beautiful art-deco surrounds of the Liverpool Philharmonic?

Wednesday – She Said Boom: The Story of The Fifth Column 6.30pm @ FACT

“The punk world was really straight and the gay world was really lame.” This is She Said Boom: The Story of The Fifth Column, a 1980s Queercore art punk band who took on gender politics and homophobia. A combination of interviews with the likes of GB Jones and Bruce la Bruce, and archive footage, is used to introduce the band and the challenges they faced to new audiences.

Thursday – Peggy Buth: Desire in Representation 5pm @ the LJMU Exhibition Research Centre

The latest exhibition at LJMU’s ERC is German artist Peggy Buth’s first solo UK show. Building on her research working with the collections of the Royal Museum for Central Africa in Tervuren, Brussels, Desire in Representation features sculptural, photographic and video works, as well as a new site-specific piece.

Friday – Love Your Blog Workshop #3: Reaching Audiences 1.15pm @ Tate Liverpool £15

Very much the science bit of the Love Your Blog summer workshops, Reaching Audiences deals with the dark arts of communicating your message to as many people as possible. Freelance writer and online community manager Rachael Jones deals with standing out, community building, and getting people to care about what you have to say, while award-winning podcaster, and “full time geek” Dan Lynch focuses on how to find and engage readers with video, podcasts, and more.

Shadow Dance @ the Bluecoat

For Shadow Dance, artist Kai-Oi Jay Yung leads a series of experimental movement and dance laboratories at the Bluecoat as part of the Portfolio NW exhibition. Transforming the gallery in to a dance studio, Yung blurs the “boundaries between…video, sound, sculpture and performance”. Read our Portfolio NW exhibition preview.

PICK OF THE WEEK: Americana Weekend @ Liverpool Philharmonic and The Caledonia

Alongside the Grammy award-winning BeauSoleil avec Michael Doucet (above) and the Cajun French music of Steve Riley & The Mamou Playboys evoking the backwaters of Louisiana at the Liverpool Philharmonic, The Caledonia pub supplements this weekend’s Americana festival with a host of  free performances from local and international acts, including favourites the Loose Moose String Band and The Downtown Dixieland Band.

Saturday – The Blood & Ice Cream Trilogy 5.30pm @ FACT

They’ve dealt with Zombies in Shaun of The Dead, shoot em ups with Hot Fuzz and with the release last week of The World’s End, sci-fi. This Saturday sees FACT present the big screen fruits of the Pegg/Wright axis back-to-back. Read our Edgar Wright profile.

Sunday – The Mello Mello Right on Record Fair 12pm @ Mello Mello

Covering “new releases, reissues and used rare, good quality 45s and LPs”, vinyl aficionados will be in a heaven of “Hip Hop, Funk, Soul, Northern, Punk, Jazz, Psych, Dance; Reggae, Latin, Rock, Disco, Gospel , Ska, Pop and Miami Bass”. With stalls from local distributors and labels, and a DJ set from Fat City’s Chris McBride, somebody get us a payday loan and a very big record bag!
